Chemical Industrial Training
Chemical Product Design by E. L. Cussler, Most chemical companies now devote new resources to the design and manufacture of specialty, high-value-added chemical products such as pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, and electronic coatings. The training of chemical engineers has remained static, however, emphasizing traditional commodities. This ground breaking text redresses the balance between commodities and higher-value-added products. It expands the scope of chemical engineering design to encompass both process design and product design. The authors use a four-step procedure for chemical product design--needs, ideas, selection, manufacture--drawing numerous examples from industry to illustrate the discussion. Chemical engineering students and beginning chemical engineers will find this text an inviting introduction to chemical product design.
Bioprocess Engineering Principles by Pauline M. Doran, The emergence and refinement of techniques in molecular biology has changed our perceptions of medicine, agriculture, and environmental management. Scientific breakthroughs in gene expression, protein engineering, and cell fusion are being translated by a strengthening biotechnology industry into revolutionary new products and services. Many a student has been enticed by the promise of biotechnology and the excitement of being near the cutting edge of scientific advancement. However, graduates trained in molecular biology and cell manipulation soon realize that these techniques are only part of the picture. Reaping the full benefits of biotechnology requires manufacturing capability involving the large-scale processing of biological material. Increasingly, biotechnologists are being employed by companies to work in cooperation with chemical engineers to achieve pragmatic commercial goals. For many years, aspects of biochemistry and molecular genetics have been included in chemical engineering curricula, yet there has been little attempt until recently to teach aspects of engineering applicable to process design to biotechnologists. This textbook is the first to present the principles of bioprocess engineering in a way that is accessible to biological scientists. Other texts on bioprocess engineering currently available assume that the reader already has engineering training. On the other hand, chemical engineering textbooks do not consider examples from bioprocessing, and are written almost exclusively with the petroleum and chemical industries in mind. This publication explains process analysis from an engineering point of view, but refers exclusively to the treatment of biologicalsystems. Over 170 problems and worked examples encompass a wide range of applications, including recombinant plant and animal cell cultures, immobilized catalysts, as well as traditional fermentation systems.
Paper, Allied-Industrial, Chemical and Energy Workers International Union - The Paper, Allied-Industrial, Chemical and Energy Workers International Union (PACE) is an international union that represents workers in the United States and Canada. PACE was founded in January 4, 1999 by the merger of the United Paperworkers International Union with the Oil, Chemical and Atomic Workers International Union. Eastman Chemical Company - Eastman Chemical Company is a large supplier of industrial chemicals, whose main manufacturing facility is located on a large island in the Holston River in Kingsport, Tennessee. It was formerly the chemical division of the Eastman Kodak Company and known as Tennessee Eastman, but was spun off by Kodak in an effort by that company to reduce its operations to its "core" photographic businesses. Chemical and Biological Arms Control Institute - The Chemical and Biological Arms Control Institute is a private, nonprofit, nonpartisan policy research organization established in 1993 to address the challenges to global security and stability in the early twenty-first century, with a special, but not exclusive focus on the elimination of chemical weapons and biological weapons. It fosters this goal through an innovative program of research, analysis, technical support, training, and education. Brayton Fire Training Field - Brayton Fire Training Field is a 120 acre (496,000 m²) facility in College Station, Texas where firefighters come from all over the world to train in high-rise rescue, aircraft firefighting, passenger train emergency response, structural collapse/heavy rescue and other mass-casualty emergencies. The facility is the largest in the United States and includes full-scale buildings, towers, tanks, industrial plant structures and a ship that are used during life-like training simulations.
